Understanding
Gastric Plication Surgery

Gastric plication, also known as gastric imbrication, is a new weight loss surgery showing very encouraging results. In this procedure, the stomach is folded over and stitched to itself, shrinking it to a small fraction of its original size. This means that it holds less food, which in turn means fewer calories consumed and successful weight loss for those who follow the post-operative guidelines provided by our experienced doctors.

How Gastric Plication is Performed

Our team at Marina Weight Loss Center performs this procedure using laparoscopy, a minimally invasive technique. Our doctors will make a series of small incisions in the abdominal area, rather than an open incision, where a camera and other medical instruments are inserted and controlled. This results in less risks to your health and an overall, faster recovery time.

After, your doctor will fold over and staple your stomach to a fraction of its original size. Unlike the gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures, there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach in the gastric plication. Unlike the lap-band, there are no adjustments required as part of the post-op follow up and support regime. For these reasons, the gastric plication may provide a viable alternative to patients looking for an effective weight loss procedure.

The end result functions much like a sleeve gastrectomy. However, unlike the gastric sleeve, with gastric plication surgery a portion of your stomach is not removed.
