Gastric Sleeve Surgery Risks & Complications
One of the most intriguing procedures in the bariatric surgery world now is the sleeve gastrectomy, more commonly known as gastric sleeve. Gastric sleeve surgery involves the removal of most of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-shaped organ that holds much less food than before. As a result, the patient is able to eat less, and significant weight loss is achieved in the vast majority of cases.
However, like any surgery, the sleeve gastrectomy — also known as gastric sleeve — can have complications, and it is important to understand the potential risks of any surgery before deciding to have treatment.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery Risk & Complications
A potential side effect of gastric sleeve surgery is nausea. This, and other side effects, are short term and typically resolves after the patients becomes acclimated to the new stomach anatomy. Complications of surgery are more serious but also more rare than side effects. Complications refer to the operative risks of surgery (risks during surgery) while side-effect means that problems occur in addition to the desired effect. This means they are generally not a concern once the patient has completed their recovery after surgery (a few days).
These can include:
- Leaking at the staple site
- Postoperative bleeding
- Deep-vein thrombosis
- Respiratory problems
Potentially Serious Medical Symptoms after Gastric Sleeve
If you have any of the symptoms below you should contact your surgeon’s office right away:
- Persistent stomach pain
- Chest or shoulder pain
- Rapid heart rate
Although these may not be serious, it is important that you consult with the appropriate medical professional to confirm whether further evaluation is needed. Of course, you should always feel free to contact our office any time you have questions or concerns regarding your surgery or your health.
However, in the case of a true medical emergency, you should always start by calling 911.
Optimizing Results of Your Gastric Sleeve
Anytime you have surgery, you want to do everything possible to maximize the outcome of that procedure. If you do not lose a satisfactory amount of weight after your gastric sleeve procedure, you will have to explore the causes with your weight loss surgeon. Often, an evaluation and improvement in diet and exercise habits is the first step in getting you back on track.
