Dieting Before and After Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery works by restricting the amount of food a person can eat, as well as by reducing the number of calories the person absorbs from food. By following a healthy and appropriate gastric bypass diet plan, you can maximize the results of this surgery.
Dieting and Nutrition Before Gastric Bypass Surgery
The gastric bypass diet before surgery will be laid out for you during a consultation at our Los Angeles-area facility with our staff nutritionist and dietitian, Julie Oldenburg. In this consultation, which will be at our Marina Del Rey Hospital weight loss center, you will determine together what changes you should make before surgery to get a head start on your weight loss and make surgery safer and recovery easier.
Dieting and Nutrition After Gastric Bypass Surgery
In order for you to stay healthy and reach your weight loss goals, there are several recommendations for your gastric bypass diet after surgery:
- Your diet must include sufficient protein, so lean protein sources should be first in line when planning, cooking, and eating meals.
- The gastric bypass partially alters the way your body absorbs certain nutrients, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and B12, so you will be required to take certain vitamin and mineral supplements.
- Patients who have had gastric bypass are susceptible to “dumping syndrome”, which can cause diarrhea and make you feel faint, shaky, and nauseated. Dumping syndrome can be brought on by foods high in sugar or fat, so patients will usually want to avoid these types of foods.
- As a general rule, foods which are high in calories and low in nutritive value, such as processed snack foods, alcohol, sodas and high-sugar desserts should be avoided as they are not conducive to long term weight loss.
All of this information will be reviewed thoroughly with you by our dietician, but feel to contact us directly with any questions you may have as you explore your surgical treatment options.
